So, what's the deal to put it seinfeld, what's the deal with these things? Why does nobody want these? It's just the best kept secret in the world right now, in my opinion, and me revealing this secret is probably not going to change anything when you look at this car, it's hard to believe that nobody wants these things, but then, when you drive it, it's completely Mind-Blowing good power too just broke the tires loose, welcome to movies garage, the dumbest automotive channel in all of youtube, and this is a 1973 mercedes, 280 se 4.5, and it is a mercedes that nobody wanted now you're, probably looking at the screen and thinking. Well, i want this mercedes, but uh you didn't. You had every opportunity to buy this car for very, very cheap and you didn't buy it. It was sold on bring a trailer, widely advertised, only brought 7 600 which didn't meet the reserve and after that, the seller advertised it all over the internet with no takers.

So i decided to scoop it up, like i said, for nine thousand dollars and see why nobody wants this. Mercedes prices have exploded on literally every other car on the internet. Every collector car every kind of mercedes, even the old diesels, are bringing 25 30 000. If they're as nice, as this original paint full service records from new i'll get into the condition of this car in a little bit, but it is an incredibly well preserved original, but nobody wants it.

What you all do seem to want, though, is more car trek and car trick for our newest season is live on tavares's channel right now, where we bought ferraris for the price of a toyota camry, or at least two of us did and today, coinciding with this Episode of hooves garage should be the last episode and you all can make car trek and hoovie's garage possible by searching for cars online on auto tempest. Auto tempest is the best way to search for a used car nationwide. They combine all the major listing sites in one search. So if you're looking for something specific but don't want to click on every single website, autotradercars.com ebay, craigslist, you name it autotypiz - will combine it all into one search.

It's something that i do every single day the fun acts for searching for cars, and you doing the exact same thing going on auto tempest and searching for cars. A very fun thing to do makes hoovey's garage and more card trek possible magic moments like this, where auto tip has challenged us to recreate our favorite ferrari movie scene, and i chose to challenge my inner nick cage in gone in 60 seconds. Take a look, my name is roger. Sir.

May i be a smile, that's funny. My name's roger two rodgers don't make a ride now roger. I have a problem. I've been in la three months.

I have money, i have taste, but i'm on nobody's a-list and saturday night is the loneliest night of the week for me. Well, then, a ferrari could certainly change that. Perhaps yes, but this this i've seen three of these parked in front of the local starbucks, which tells me one thing: there's too many self-indulgent wieners in this town with too much bloody money. Now, if i had a 1994 ferrari 456 gt with a gated six-speed manual, you would not be a self-indulgent wiener, sir, you would be a connoisseur.
Precisely champagne would fall from the sky doors. Would open velvet ropes would part. I don't have one here, sir, but i do have one in the warehouse. What else do you have in the warehouse? Yes, 9 000, for this seems like an absolute steal, but it's kind of the going rate for this car.

It's been the same price for over 10 years. I've always wanted one. I've just never been able to pounce on the right one at the right time. You can find these in v8s in line sixes manual transmissions, there's plenty to choose from of the 108 chassis, but in my lifetime they've always been cheap and underappreciated.

In that theme, that trend seems to be the same and it makes absolutely no sense to me. This was the s-class before. Well, it's not really an s-class. The next generation was actually the first generation where they used the s as sort of the class of the car back in this car's day, you actually needed to know chassis designations.

To know the difference of this being a 108 or a 109 chassis or 116 123 107 right behind me, it all gets very confusing. Mercedes did a very good job of confusing people with their nomenclature, which we'll get to the back here in a little bit with that. But this was the first car that put mercedes on the map when it comes to us buyers like what lexus did to mercedes. In 1989 or 1990, or even most recently, genesis with hyundai and all their new span of luxury vehicles, just turning the whole luxury game upside down.

This is what mercedes did in the 1960s to disrupt the american luxury car game and well established mercedes as the dominant luxury brand in the world before this mercedes was coming out of an awkward post-world war ii era. Of course, germany chopped in half with the berlin wall and the cars the earlier ones. Well, they had the fins on them like the 50s cars. They were always a decade behind.

They either looked like pre-war cars, or they looked like cars from the 50s and going to the 60s, they really needed to modernize. So this area, mercedes, pinned by paul brack, a famous designer kind of defined mercedes, the shape of them for several decades, and it is absolutely gorgeous, unlike luxury cars of today, there's no mistaking this for anything but a mercedes. Now all luxury cars they kind of look the same, but back in the day. Look at this big grill, these stacked headlights, there's no mistaking this for a bmw for a cadillac for really anything else.

You would mistake this mercedes, though, for a lesser or a nicer model, because they were so similar and a lot of that confusion comes from well. The back of this car, so mercedes today is very confusing with their nomenclature with their badging. It makes very little sense. The cls cla gla, the numbers, don't match up to the displacement of the engines.
It's not a recent trend. Mercedes has been doing this well for over 50 years. This car is a prime example. We have a 280 se 4.5, so it's not a 280.

A 2.8 liter inline six. It is a 4.5 liter v8, but they retained this number because well because they didn't always do it. That way, because there used to be the 250s in this chassis, which was a carbureted inline, six cylinder engine, i believe, and the 280se was the fuel injected. That's what the e means on this car was like einspritz or something s means saunder class for the full size big class.

So the e-class of today comes from the old mercedes 300es, which the e signified fuel injection. The d300d signified diesel, but then they just made that into the e-class, because most people were calling it the e and the d and the s and well that's what they did. But back in the day it was very different and even weirder was the different chassis. The 108 and the 109 chassis - this is the 108.

This is a lesser, but it's basically kind of the same car. The 109 was the more luxurious version. It had air suspension, it had the 6.3 liter v8 in some cases, which is the most desirable version of this car, arguably other than the convertibles, i suppose, and better finishes on the inside and out. I believe the chrome was different.

This is like anodized aluminum versus actually real dipped. Nice fancy, chrome vacuum locks, power windows, that kind of stuff, but it all got more murky as the model years went on. This is the very end of the run for this chassis 1973. They were actually making the new s-class at the same time as this, so it has a lot of the luxury items and a few other strange things which i shall show you now on the tour of my newest purchase.

So, as i give you a tour of my latest purchase, maybe you can help me out here in figuring out why nobody wants this generation of mercedes because it is so darn cool first, when you're taking this car. Is it a bad example? Is it a rusty one and no, it is not. This is the original paint to this car. It's been all of its life other than the last couple of years in california, and this is all original paints.

All original chrome it has somewhere the wheels, have lost their finish. These are the bunt wheels which were actually introduced on this chassis of car. It looks like a bundt cake mold. It doesn't have the matching uh color match hubcaps.

There are, you know, a little scratch here, but just little things around the car, but since his original paint is kind of a cool patina, it's part of the character of the vehicle and no, this isn't a neglected car. That's been sitting forever either. It's not high mileage, it has a little over a hundred thousand miles on it uh, but it's been used and taken care of and comes with complete service records. I mean complete back to 1974..
This goes through the early 2000s and then we have a few more recent service records that were pretty extensive, so this car was well taken care of under the hood inside and out and we'll look inside just so i can show you look at this original blue Vinyl interior, very, very nice shape the wood has some surface cracking in it, a few cracks on the dashboard, but overall just nice character. This is a very well preserved original car, the horsehair padding starting to degrade in the seats, and you can see it coming out in the carpets. That's why this thing's lost some cushioning and you can kind of smell, well smell, horse hair in the car, but that can be corrected. It's just a normal age-related thing, along with the seals here they whistle when you drive it.

But if you leave this quarter seal open, just a crack, it doesn't whistle or make very much noise, and then you don't even notice it, but i can replace these they're 100 each not cheap, but not expensive, either and inside. It is a very cool classic interior. But it has all the modern comforters you have air conditioning, you have heat, defrost, all lights and wipers. I guess lights and wipers aren't modern things, but it does feel when you drive it like a much more modern car power windows down here, but look at the condition of this thing.

Yes, it has somewhere. Yes, it's not mint, but it's a really nice. All original survivor and if you were buying a later generation of s-class or a 300 diesel, which i used to own several examples of those in this kind of condition, you would be paying more for it and that just makes no sense to me at all. Now.

You're, probably thinking well this thing's older, so it's going to be more maintenance, but actually this older car has some mechanical advantages. It's not super complicated with all the modern computers uh, especially in the 90s and mid-2000s that were really really bad. No biodegradable wiring harnesses of the 90s big gotcha back then under the hood, is a very simple 4.5 liter v8. Everything under here is accessible and you know what it is and it is fuel injected.

But it's not the weird bosch cage mechanical electronic weird thing that the later cars had this thing has a simple brain box: simple electronic fuel injection fuel delivery issues are very common on the v8 in my sl, but i don't think it's a big deal with these Because it is such a simple fuel injection system and look how few electronics there are just a few relays up here, but really not very much going on. But, despite being so simple, it delivers a very modern, pleasant driving experience where you really feel like you could drive this car every day, even though it's almost 50 years old. Yet nobody wants it. When you look at this car, it's hard to believe that nobody wants these things, but then, when you drive it, it's completely mind-blowing.
Why nobody wants these things because it doesn't drive like an old crappy car, and this is not an old crappy example. Certainly not! Yes, the seats are a little saggy because the horse hair is falling out. I don't have the air conditioner on because it only blows at one speed full out which uh would drown out the audio, but overall this car seems very sordid and nice, and then the couple of days has been sitting in my driveway. It hasn't leaked anything either.

Good power too just broke the tires loose, we're gon na pass a camry hybrid, that's accelerating! Normally it has plenty of power. It handles pretty well for a carver's area way better than any american land yachts, and it's just a very, very nice place to be i'm getting more road noise from that toyota. Next to me than i am this 50 year old mercedes. It's just absolutely astounding, with the exception of the rust proofing, these things are very, very rust prone.

That's why this one coming from california's entire life is a good thing original paint, so it can't hide anything under the paint, a very good thing, other than that these cars are built to last forever, and this one is definitely making a case for it in those Service records, there's no history of the engine being rebuilt. I don't believe the transmission being rebuilt, nothing serious, just normal maintenance and little electrical repairs here and there windows going out that kind of stuff, but nothing that serious and for an unrestored car. That's almost 50 years old, 125 000 miles, so it's probably been sitting for a little while in between there, that's really really impressive. This is a classic car that you could buy and well almost daily drive.

If you wanted to - and i've tried that with a lot of old cars and a lot of much newer, mercedes and and failed several times to daily drive a classic or vintage car, but this one seems definitely within the realm of possibility. I actually know a few people that do daily drive these things still to this day. So, what's the deal to put it seinfeld, what's the deal with these things? Why does nobody want these things? I mean it's just the best kept secret in the world right now. In my opinion, and me revealing this secret is probably not going to change anything.

You go look at them for sale, there's several listed at great prices and as long as they check out body, wise and mechanically, there's no reason not to buy them, but people don't so just is what it is. I imagine if i pulled up at the club in this in a modern say my box was right in front of me. I would get just as many looks, because this car is so elegant and classy and timeless uh, and nobody would think that i paid nine thousand dollars for this car nine thousand dollars - oh this thing's, so so nice. So i imagine you guys are about as confused as me on why these cars are not wanted by anybody why they are so cheap, especially when comparable versions, different body styles of this car, bring so much more.
A convertible 280 se is well, it could be a 250 000 car, but you add two doors to it and a hard top roof and a little bit less than the luxury quality comforts. And it's it's a 9 000 car. It's a 7600 car that makes no sense. The only theory i have is there are so many bad examples of these on the market, so many neglected ones, so many that have rusted out, because these are very very prone to rust.

Maybe five horrible examples to one nice that all the bad ones kind of drag down the prices of the nice ones. Maybe, though, when i take this car to the car, wizard he'll give me several thousands worth of reasons why this was so cheap. But he said himself when i was looking at this car that he loves working on these things and uh well, they're, very easy and usually cheap to work on so go figure. It's it's a total mystery, but i'm happy that i finally landed one.

Yeah its a weird world. A solid ish 280se will be around 10-12k where I live. And an E28 is that or more. And the E28 a gorgeous car. But nothing like the Merc. So definitely a good choice to buy one now!

Almost most done doing a 75 280 Blue four door gone through mechanical, fuel pump, brakes, radiator, gas tank, shocks the starter ways three days to get out 10 minutes to get in, might be on the road this month.

You may be part of problem. Some of us don’t like spending 9,000.00 for a 50 year old not as safe car.
    9,000.00
I can think of many ways to use 9,000.00 and keep my family safe.
Nobody wants to pay more than 1500.00
And it would need to be about 900.00 for me
Please consider showing cars that are worth the price. Still I love your videos yet at the prices you pay and you expert mechanics costs
I really can’t afford any of them 😢

These are really awesome cars. I got to blast around in a lovely 1972 example (fully sorted) and there is no question these are undervalued. They can have ice ice cold air conditioning and that’s a huge plus. I’d pay 9 grand for this example in a split second.

…my very first car was a white 1972 280 SEL 4.5 back in ‘86. I inherited it from my grandfather when I turned 17. A month later he was gone. Then on my 21st my grandmother handed me her1971 280 SE 3,5 Cabriolet also in White. I still have them together with a few more inherited MBZ from my folks.

I think the V8 on this car should be a 6.3Litre engine not 4.5Litre. Did a previous owner convert and put the later W116 4.5Litre engine? Also, the V8 cars had to have the air suspension, but the straight 6 just had coil springs and this was also true with the hydaulic leveler in the rear axle.

My dream car is an old W123/124 diesel or an old BMW E36/39. They really fit the landscape of my country, the Philippines. W123 in rural areas and W124 basically everywhere else. I just think vehicles here in general suck excluding Toyota Land Cruisers. People here just like to rice their shitboxes and turn their SUVs and pickups into monster trucks. What is wrong with car owners in this country?

These got popular in the 2000s like every other 70s car they exploded in value going from 3k to 20k back then. Back in 1999 I had a W108 1971 3.5L v8 for $5000. Looking at classifieds now they're 40k for the 3.5, more for a 4.5 and you probably won't even find them in good condition. Plenty of 2.8L 6cyl for 20-30K. These aren't a secret bargain in Australia. E: I fed my "cheap German" fetish buying a $2k BMW E34 so I guess we have different values for "cheap". Cheap and classic is fluid. 70s cars became expensive 25+ years ago, 80s cars 15+ years ago, 90s cars back up on price recently.

NOBODY wants these because because NO BODY needs it.
When 'one' becomes A BODY it means you are DEAD.
You are not yet fluent in the English language and have not

    conversely everyone – everybody

Hideous looking car to be fair, no wonder nobody wants them! Looks like something out of an old 1960s East Germany spy movie! ⚠️😯😁

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rodney Hedger says:

Really, you should see the Australian market for these, where they start at the price of a new Corolla. If you could find one.

My 71 280s had the center console cushion…. But being a car in the pacific northwest led to a lot of rust. Also, does your have the wiper blade foot pedal?!

Some would say that this was the last era of MB cars being of genuinely superior quality, if they have experienced a somewhat newer Benz they'd be terrified of the potentially daunting costs of operation. But these babies are, if maintained, pretty indestructible.
I think a problem with this particular model is that is virtually indistinguishable from cheaper models, many of which stopped being desirable years ago, mostly due to folks just driving them literally to death…

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TommyMacDaddy1 says:

I had a '68 250SE with a 2.5 six and a 4 speed manual for over 24 years. The car was mechanically fuel injected and had the very rare, optional skid plates and limited slip diff. Completely original interior. I took great care of that car, even going as far as putting a 3,27 ring and pinion in, replacing the 4,06, to make it more drivable. I was heart broken to find that the driver's side frame rail had rotted from the inside. Sold it to a guy, fully disclosing the issues, for less than half of what Hoovie paid for this car.
