All right, welcome to the Movies Garage! The dumbest Automotive channel in all of YouTube And this is my latest impulsive purchase. I Shouldn't be buying any cars right now, but the opportunity came to buy the cheapest view at Grand National in the USA selling at Barrett Jackson in Palm Beach a few weeks ago I Couldn't help myself for thirty five thousand dollars I Got the last year of an iconic car 1987, the most powerful year and of course the Darth Vader knows amazing Grand National These things are total Legends It's born from Nascar in 1981, the Winston Cup or whatever it's called nowadays was called the Grand National before they sold it as sponsorships. So this car was named after the Nascar Championship series which Daryl Waltrip won in 1981 with a Buick Regal that looked a lot like this. Now, the Regal had shrunk considerably in this year, which actually made it better for racing, but it was built more to be an economical car.
The V8 was also gone in favor of a V6 which is another part of this legendary car under the hood a 3.8 liter turbo charge V6 which I'll show you in a little bit, but it was actually born from the fuel crisis of the 1970s trying to get more economy and power out of less displacement. but it was used for great performance in this car. So in a really unlikely scenario of a car trying to economize, we get one of the greatest performance cars from General Motors of all time. This thing was faster than just about anything else on the road.
Faster than a Corvette faster than most Ferraris other than the F40 Even faster than a Lamborghini Countach which we will drive today. We'll line this up next to a Lamborghini Countach and prove the point. These things were unbelievably fast. So when the Grand National was born in 1982, it was a little more than a styling package. You got the turbocharged V6 but it wasn't all that powerful. A few years later, it became its own model, but they really didn't come into their own until 1986 when the 3.8 liter turbo got an intercooler and then the performance was unbelievable. By 1987, the horsepower was 276, which was underrated. Doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it was underrated from the factory torque.
Certainly where it's at with the Turbo 300, almost 50 pound feet of torque doesn't sound like a lot, but the 0-60 4.9 seconds, which was absolutely epic in 1987 faster than just about anything a Corvette by almost a full second. Just absolutely unbelievable. So when the opportunity came for me to buy one of these, especially one as nice as this I couldn't help myself. but there is, as always a story as to why I got one so cheap now I've been working for Barrett-Jackson for a few years now doing their live TV coverage on history and FYI and other than one auction where I got a little carried away and bought well, a few Mercedes I haven't bought very much, but the most likely one for me to buy at is at Palm Beach on Thursday which is the entry level day where there's a lot of projects, a lot of Cheaper cars and that's where this Grand National was selling on Thursday the first day at Palm Beach and it did have a few hickeys.
number one, it's from Canada so it's a Canadian market car that makes it worth a little bit less. but also on the vehicle history report it was showing some damage reported where it was over ten thousand dollars to fix it. but I poured all over this thing and I couldn't find anywhere other than it was completely repainted that it was seriously damaged the trunk. It doesn't line up that well, but all the other gaps look just fine and underneath it didn't look like anything frame wise was hit.
so I felt pretty good about bidding on it. Also being from Canada you have to worry about rust underneath. it didn't look that bad. Of course we'll get it up on the lift later with Wizard and give it a full inspection, but I Looked it over for a good long while and didn't see any serious problems.
Ice Cold Air Conditioning Everything seemed to be working right and well. look how nice it is on the inside. This one is a T-top car which is a cool option. Of course it rattles and leaks so that needs to be addressed.
but look at the beautiful Mouse hair seats I mean they really did try to make this thing look a little more sporty than your granddad's Buick and I think they did a fantastic job. but since it's Canadian you can see that's in kilometers 96 000 kilometers so a little over 50 000 miles. but very very stock the old Delco stereo climate control. Everything else in here very well kept, certainly looks like a low mileage car. and then you go under the hood and you can see the business into this thing. So the V6 it's mounted pretty far back for good weight distribution. sort of like the SLS AMG I suppose almost a mid-engine front engine car. but then you see the giant Garrett turbo.
There has a little bit of a heat shield on it, but that's where it gets all this power. And then you can see down there is the intercooler which is fed down here. They made a little cutout in the air dam to feed into the intercooler. It's just so dang cool and obviously epic performance.
So I bought this thing. You know at an auction. you can't really drive the cars, test drive them. You just start them up, hear them run, hope they don't smoke.
Hopefully the transmission shifts that kind of stuff. and I was so so dang lucky. Bought it for only 35 000 which is very cheap for one of these with low mileage and this well kept and it drove perfectly from the first moment I pulled out that unbelievable power. was there that stoplight launch which I haven't experienced before with a Grand National Now I've had the later cars of course the GMC Typhoon and Cyclone that was a 4.3 liter V6 and all-wheel drive but this is the granddaddy of them all.
and other than needing a battery and a tank of gas I Was able to drive this thing all week as my commuter going to the auction. So so dang happy. Oh heavy. Hood But really, the Grand National just combines everything I Love about cars.
It is a comfy, cruising sort of touring vehicle. It has that soft, gentle Buick ride. I've had a lot of Buicks You know how much I love them but it has this menacing look this Darth Vader looking Grill here The Styling is epic. It's one of the few really badass looking cars of the 1980s that wasn't a bazillion dollars but then also the performance that straight lines top light drag racing experience.
It's just so much fun so it really is the best of everything. And I can't wait to take you guys for a drive and show you how awesome this thing is and stack it up with an old. foe. Oh well.
First impressions if you didn't see the Darth Vader looking outside is this is a pretty normal Grandpa looking Buick from the 80s with one key difference. Of course there's that Grand National badge there on the dashboard. The seats certainly special with that Corkscrew lettering there. But also you have this digital tachometer and then below it you see it says turbo boost PSI because when you get on this thing, it boosts hard and you see that thing just went right to 15 psi which I Don't believe it's supposed to do from the factory.
So maybe this thing has been modified a little bit because it does pull very very hard. And yes, Buick did mess the suspension a little bit on these. uh, maybe help the braking some I'm not sure a few little tweaks for performance, but overall it feels like an old grandpa car with a nice soft cushy ride. The seats even though they are different, they are soft and cushy so it gives you that old school land yachty kind of vibe with really Modern Performance of course with a Twist and then there's this old T-top experience which is very cool. It continued until 2002. I guess with the Camaros and the Trans Ams and then it was gone. Just a nice touch. Of course it rattles and leaks though because it's from the 80s.
The seals have worn out so that can definitely be fixed. Now with the Grand National to get a good launch, you have to power brake it to where this thing gets in the boost a little bit and then go. Now we're accelerating hard. they're 60.
just insanely quick. This car but in a very old school Big Turbo way kind of like a Porsche 911 Turbo The Boost hits so late it feels normal until it really gets in and then it pulls you back. Which a 930 Turbo a Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40 Those were the only three cars that were quicker than the Grand National when it was new as a stock production car. So this thing was faster than so many other things, even a stock Corvette This car was faster.
Geez, it just pulls and these things are so ridiculously cheap in my opinion and the only reason for that is production numbers. In 1987, they finally ramped up production enough to meet demand and built 20 000 of these cars. But then that was the last year. then the door was slammed shut a few years ago.
Bear Jackson I was able to help sell the last Grand National ever built on the assembly line. It was like put away in somebody's living room or a spare bedroom and preserved. But after that the Regal became a front-wheel drive platform and obviously a front-wheel drive big turbo car. You just have a bunch of torque steer and it would be absolutely terrible.
So this was the last of I Guess what you would call the old school muscle car. but it is so dang different than anything that came before and well, the performance that we're seeing today. Now these cards with a bit of mods can get to well over 600 horsepower, which sounds insane. Obviously this one's been modded a little bit.
Uh, but I don't know how much and when they're modded properly, they can bring a lot of money as well. Same as the low mileage. Nice cars you can see them sell for over fifty thousand dollars in both cases. Now the very expensive ones are the GNX They made less than 500 of those in 1987 Modified by ASC McLaren American Sunroof Company really dialed the things up even more and only 500 of those.
and they sell for well over a hundred thousand dollars when they pop up for sale. So even though it's the more common Grand National and not worth all that much, it still has the racing pedigree, amazing looks and performance. This really is a world-class vehicle and just to prove it to you, we're going to put it against a legend. another world-class car worth a whole lot more money. all right. Now for the matchup: I Don't think anybody has ever seen before on video a bureaucrat National versus an 89 countage my countage 449 horsepower. so almost 200 more than the Grand National But when it comes to torque, they're pretty close 370 350 but these were very underrated. Plus with the automatic I can power break this thing and really spool up the turbo like that? All right, we're ready.
It's just a total spec on the horizon I Mean he would catch up eventually, but these things are just that ridiculous. I Love this car. It's obviously driving fantastically, pulling probably harder than it was brand new I wonder if it has some mods on it? but uh, it is over 30 years old so maybe the car wizard will find something wrong with it I don't know. Oh the countage is finally making its way back.
well I didn't expect the green until the collection such uh, see if it's any closer Lambo Yoga Wow. ready? Yeah, All right, come on. I mean I would gain on them eventually I'm starting to now but we are already way over 60. it's just the boost on that car.
It is so amazingly quick. Wow! just jumped away after 60. I was starting to reel them in but still at the quarter mile I probably wouldn't catch the car. Just incredible how quick those Grand Nationals are they look? They look so awesome! Very very happy with that purchase obviously.
uh I haven't had a look at that mechanically. it is running great, but the car wizard may find some things in this old car. the Dodge running great as well. Thank you so much for watching foreign.

Always wanted a GNX; wish I would have bought them when you could get them easily for under $10k; much like the E30 M3's back in the day.
Keep that up and don't have a crankshaft left those 3/8 don't have a bottom-end built for that kind of torque and you know it
My dad had an 86 or 87 with the 3.8 l he had one motor rebuilt at 110 thousand and put anther motor in about 60 thousand later .so apparently those 3.8s from back then had timing chains that were supposed to be replaced every 60k so I'm not sure if those internals are shared or not but that would be something I'd look into especially since those are interference motors
