This car is going to be down. That car's broken. so I bought another daily driver Cadillac another one. That's how you fix things So when your hoops, that's a good idea.
Yeah I Thought So welcome to Hoobie's Garage. The dumbest Automotive channel in all of YouTube and it is Cadillac day here at Hoovie's Garage. You see my two fin vehicles from very different decades here: a 2011 Cadillac CTS-V wagon that is broken and a 1949 Cadillac Fastback with these beautiful fins that is also broken. Both of these cars need to go up to the car Wizards for some probably big repairs unfortunately and because of that I bought another Cadillac that completely and totally works because I'm a complete idiot but also because it was a great deal.
So you're going to come along with me today as I shuffle both of these up to the car Wizards figure out what's wrong with them and then see the new third Cadillac that I absolutely didn't need. Now let's start with the 49 which we're driving up First, this one is the Harley Earl icon where it was titled after the P-38 Lightning World War II aircraft with the twin tails and it launched the whole thin craze. but this one has a modern engine of the hood a 500 cubic inch V8 from a 70s Cadillac Updated suspension and brakes as well. so it drives like a much much newer car.
It'll Cruise 80 90 miles per hour down the highway but unfortunately it is gushing transmission fluid in my garage where it was for a few months. It left a lot on the ground. Let's see if there's any here. Um, well, surprisingly not so either it was overfilled or magically healed itself.
But still, there's other things to do. One thing that wasn't fixed from the last round of the car Wizards Uh, I didn't tell them to fix it is the fuel gauge it does not read, which would be very nice to have a working fuel gauge with this gas guzzling 500 cubic inch V8 But the leak is certainly a concern. the other car. well, it's had a noisy differential from the moment I've had it, especially on deceleration and I need to get it fixed.
In addition, this wheel, well, apparently it has a crack in it and it's allowing air to escape. so I need to get another wheel? I'm topping off the tire every five days or so, which is quite annoying. I Also need to find some tail lights for this thing because when you take it through the drive-through car wash, it'll catch on these beautiful, thinned tail lights and well do that. Which looks absolutely awful, but let's start with the 49 Cadillac and heading up to the Car Wizard.
It is just so ridiculous to be cruising at speed feed a high speed so easily. in a car this old I'm kind of blocked by big rigs right now. that's what's slowing me down I Could go even faster here on the interstate as we go to the Car Wizards but I think when I drive fast like this. it really accelerates the gushing that comes out of the transmission so we'll see what it is.
but this thing's very smooth. It's a windy day. we got the big Rig, kind of knocking the window so we have a little bit more wind noise than usual. but it's amazing car. Love that horn! Hello Wizard Man it doesn't get old. I know I could just get a chair and just sit down and just look at it. It is a sight to behold. It's wonderful to drive! I Love everything about this car except for the massive transmission leak that it has right now.
Yes, sadly, she has left a oh oh, she has left a puddle in my garage at home and then some drippings at the hangar. So it's like a lot of transmission fluid. I Know you messed with something before the drive shaft. Something like that, right? Yeah, the drive shaft.
We thought it might be actually too long for the modifications they did. We did put a new seal and it stopped it. but and maybe we have to do something with the drive shaft like shorten it by about an inch. Just the Angry Inch Okay, well or it could be something else.
It really seemed to get bad when I came off the highway. like when I do highway driving I took a turn and dumped on the exhaust. There was some smoke in the cabin right when I got off. But another thing which we didn't address last time because I didn't know the fuel gauge it.
it doesn't move. It doesn't move. It's stuck at a quarter and it's there forever. So I would love for that to work again as well.
Okay, but I'll leave you to it. Feel free to look it over and get started because there's the other broken Cadillac I had to bring up too another one. Yes, the CTSV Yes, it's the song that ever ends. seriously.
Well that oil leak was a nice new discovery. But what I knew about was this diff noise which when you get on a little bit under really light load, there is just a small wine, almost like it's an older pre-war car. non-synchronized gearbox or something like that, but it's in the back. It's the differential and it has gotten a little bit worse in the three months or so that I've owned this car.
But now we have a mystery oil leak to contend with along with the wheel that won't hold air. So oh my wizard. Um, so that's your daily driver Cadillac right there or what was have you? have you lost your mind? Well, I'm I'm going through and bulletproofing the thing. Okay, so a perfectly running and driving motor.
You're swapping it out with another motor just to have better head bolts. Yep, well, the other motor had some stripped out bolts. I know from somebody else that have been in there. I See, All right, so you've dropped the whole thing out now.
It's been a few days since I've been up here. I Was going to come right back, but then stuff popped up. So I it? What have you? Okay, um, please don't do that to either of these cars. like you plug the oil leaks on that one, right? Okay, well, uh.
this one heard it and started leaking too. Oh okay, of course. let's go see what you've done here first. Okay, so it was leaking from a lot of places. huh? Yeah, it had it, had hoses and pieces and they were starting to leak. So we put some new hoses in and took care of that leak all right. And then the oil pan itself was leaking. We've got a new gasket.
everything. Magic mites got it back together. so it was leaking there as well. And then there was a third leak.
Yeah, there was a side of the transmission right? That was the big one that was gushing. Huh? Yeah, there's this little Governor housing here. There's this plate. It was just pouring I'm still waiting on the gasket on that, but that will be plugged once it comes in.
So it was leaking coolant. It was leaking oil. It's leaking transmission fluid and gasoline. And gasoline.
Okay, uh. from where you see, that's your old fuel pump. Yeah, it's all coated And stained. So they have an electric fuel pump that was just running through that just kind of bypassing it.
Um, even though I don't think it ever worked right? Excuse me from like the 70s? Cadillac Yeah, Right here is the pump is actually making your engine run I See, Okay, and rather than reroute plumbing and everything to do away with the fuel pump, they just ran it through the fuel pump right here. and finally it failed and started leaking. Okay, well I mean this is sort of the normal second round of repairs that you see on a car that you put back into service that's been sitting for a long time. because obviously you went through it once.
Now you're going through it again. Oh, the fuel. Tank's out too. So you're getting a new sender for it to get the the tank working.
Yep, they had this, uh, kind of an aftermarket universal one and it didn't last very long. It doesn't work. it's a little fuel. see it sink, it sank.
Yeah. Okay, not only is it full of fuel, but we measured resistance on it Magic Mike did and at certain points it would just register zero, then go to one volt and then half a volt junk. All right. Well, you're making pretty quick work of this thing.
and also you're reading it. So I have heat again? right? Yes. Remember last summer you thought your AC wasn't working. But it was.
It's just that the heater core has no shut off on this. They were fighting each other. Yeah, they were fighting each other. Now we need to hook up some Valves and things so that when winter comes, you can change it around for winter.
and in summer you can shut off the heater core for summer. Well, that's good. It all sounds a little expensive though. a lot of Labor and it won't be too bad, but it's not going to be two or three hundred bucks.
Well, unfortunately, this one has a noisy differential which I knew about when I bought it, but now it's from a really big oil leak. so we have another oil and another one. It's been a month of oil leaks another one. so I guess that lift? well differential wise, there's not much you can do other than replace it I Guess we could try fluid and hope, but doubtful. It just has a little bit of a whine on light acceleration and D cell so it could be sent off to be rebuilt or just find a good salvage yard one and put it in there. Yeah, I knew it was going to go down a while because of that, but I didn't expect the oil leak which. let's see what it is. Where is it? Where are you? Oh, this is just the oil filter.
it's either that I don't I don't really see anything else. where was it at in the middle of the car? Yeah, yeah, they're splashing right here. Yeah I just think it's the oil filter. A bad batch of AC Delco oil filters which I've actually had that happen with my van.
Oh yeah, it almost took out the engine because of a defective AC Delco oil filter which. It's a big problem right now. go figure. So that's all that's it.
All right? Well I guess I need to start shopping for diff ideas. but uh, this car is going to be down. That car's broken. So I bought another daily driver Cadillac another one.
That's how you fix things. So when your hoopties break, yeah with other hoopties, another one that's a good idea. Yeah I Thought so well. I keep coming back to this platform.
the GMT 800 specifically the Escalade just because I can't help myself of course the one I had a year ago, the Riptide Blue Platinum Who could forget that? Well, it was very easy to sell when I had my hoopty Purge and I immediately regretted it I had since bought a Z71 Suburban and then listed that for sale because well, I liked the Escalade better. But I've discovered with this one that there's something I really like about it that I didn't think that I would now I wasn't planning on buying an Escalade I saw this thing pop up on Facebook Marketplace at Eddie Chevrolet Cadillac the same people I just did a video with the EV Hummer and they bought the Ford Lightning This car is actually what started the relationship with them because they had taken it on trade. It was a two owner no accident Escalade and the Carfax was unbelievable. Had service records out the Wazoo including a new transmission from General Motors At 70 000 miles it is a cream puff with only 87 000 miles in amazing condition in the second best color in my opinion white diamond I Don't know how to say that color in a weird way but you guys hated Riptide blue when I was doing that last time.
But what makes this thing really cool are two things. Number one, the condition obviously. but number two are these wheels which I could not remember if these were Factory accessories or an option which this 2005 Escalade brochure really helped me with that here. take a look at this thing.
the graphics in it are just unbelievable. So cool. Of course we don't get brochures like this anymore. 2005 was the first year of the platinum as well. that's what I had before but I was wondering I knew these wheels here were Factory but I didn't know if they were an option or an accessory and back here you can see it was an option not a dealer installed one which were a little more blingy. Now this was back when of course everybody was buying Escalades and watching pip my ride or MTV Cribs seeing 20 or 22 inch rims getting put on them and Cadillac wanted to be part of the fun so they began offering these as an option and they look after market but they are totally Factory and really rare because they were very expensive. But there is one other thing that I really like about this: Escalade which I shall show you now on the tour. Let's just take a second to show off how cool this brochure is.
I mean the photos, the graphics, the center fold. it's so neat. but then when you go back here you can see the six liter. Vortec they have this translucent sort of cutaway into the motor showing off the new technology here.
just so dang neat. But this Escalade I love it for multiple reasons. The condition: absolutely astounding. The headlights.
They never look like this anymore, usually they're faded on top. the white diamond paint also just shining so bright. the chrome wheels they will clean up and that is very cool. Very rare.
But the big thing I love about this is the fact that it is the short wheelbase which is something that I haven't owned before. It's all been long wheelbases. My parents also only had the long wheelbases growing up, which is where I had the bias. I Thought you have to have the long wheelbase ones, but man does it make such a huge difference driving these things, parking them, getting around when they are shorter and it is pretty big.
The difference here. So you see the shorter one has a wheelbase of 116 inches, a length of 198.9 the wheelbase on the long ones 130, the length 221 so a foot shorter on the wheelbase and then almost two feet shorter. Overall on the vehicle, it's it's gargantuan. the difference and really you can feel it when you drive this thing and get around.
It's so much easier, but you still get the full old school luxury experience which is why I Love these things so much and keep coming back. Now the third row. it does get well, a little tighter, but with it folded down you can use it. This is where you'll regret not having the two extra feet.
but if you don't have five kids, it's just two of mine. so really no big deal back here. Very very nice interior wise. Holy smokes I mean a little bit of cleanup but very little wear in the leather headliner.
in great shape and it smells oh so good. I Had a couple of days of bliss and then I was greeted with a warm Amber glow of the check engine light of course, but look at the original navigation screen here. the infotainment system Usually all the buttons have sort of worn out here. these look really nice. The Bose stereo sounds fantastic. It's just astounding how nice this truck is. Oh, they just sink right into these thick foam seats and that is the biggest difference. I Think between the old ones and the new ones, the seats got less and less foam, more modern and ergonomic or European or whatever and they just aren't as comfortable as this the new ones.
They're downright rock hard and you do give up a little bit of that suspension smoothness for looks to get those 20s on there. With the factory 18s. that tire absorption is a little bit better, but still a very very soft comfy air ride in the rear. just so nice.
And of course newer ones. they have mag ride control that is very good, but you have little bitty tires 22-inch Wheels I think are the smallest nowadays and that gives up quite a bit of this ride quality that you look for in these old Cadillacs and these old GMT 800 trucks as well. And then the horsepower, Well, well over 300 with a 6 liter Vortec Plenty of power to get out of its own way. Very simple.
pretty much Invincible drivetrain other than the Transmissions but this one has been done. Transmissions Aren't that bad though. Full-time all-wheel drive system which is the one thing I probably like with the Suburban over these the Suburban you can turn it off into two wheel drive, but otherwise same thing now. the dealership had taken this on tray.
Now the dealership had taken this on trade and they just wanted to flip it really quick so they put it on Facebook Marketplace for 99.95 which was a great deal I saw it and I rushed down there I offered 8 500 bucks and they took it just like that which I was very surprised I would have paid probably 95 or 10 grand but anyway I was very happy they took my first offer and what a steal! I could probably flip this thing for almost double what I paid for it but I'm not gonna because I really like it. Unfortunately though, this isn't as is where is used car wholesale trade in. So the check engine light is on me and hopefully it it's not something serious. So I guess we should go back up to the Car Wizard with my third broken Cadillac Wizard yes my latest daily driver Cadillac and it's uh, also broken you it's broken too it.
The check engine light has popped on but you just bought it I know I know. So now we have three four broken Cadillacs in the shop. Hey what do you think of this one wizard I love that! Cadillac pearl white yes the white diamond this thing's garage kept two owner 88 000 miles and the factory 20s which are very very rare. oh those are Factory those are factory rims.
Yep, they don't look Factory No I mean they were trying to do something because everybody was putting aftermarket wheels on them back in the day. You know they're very expensive so nobody did. It looks like some Wheels you'd see on big Ultimate Energy or something. Oh well. back in the day with MTV hit my ride in cribs I mean yeah, it fits right in. Oh my goodness the headlights are lights are crystal clear. almost. Yeah, just really nice garage kept example that's uh, already broke.
but uh, let's find out. Yeah built in Texas by Texans Arlington are these years those are Liams and they're a few days to hold here I wish you would have told me that about you. Well you taste all kinds of things. evap.
Vent control circuit. uh-huh that's probably see that's not the per. just the vent that's in the back. so that's just a little evap vent in the back.
They're known for failing. They're right by the fuel tank. now the pesky evaporative emissions codes. but uh, hopefully you can figure that one out.
Huh? Yeah, it's just going to be the vent in the back by the fuel tank. It's like a 10 minute job. Oh really? So is that one a freebie? Maybe. Yeah.
Well now the book time's like an hour so no, no Christmas gifts here at Omega Auto Clinic But uh yeah. broken. Cadillacs There's several right here. Yeah, what a life we live wizard.
Thank you for watching. Holy crap.
Tyler is my favorite youtuber.
Hoovies Garage? LOL! More like Hoopties Garage!
Just joshin' yah. Keep on Keepin' on!
Don't blame the AC DELCO oil filters when you know it was the mechanic who fitted the filter, and either under tightened, or over tightened the filter.
The guilty look on the Wizards face was priceless…!
