Seemed like he was trying everything the hard way first

Cadillac has something similar, I’m not sure what it enables down the line making the timing chain go around that way instead of just straight across where it can be tight, but even on little four cylinders, the timing chain cannot go straight has to be pushed around a certain way needing a guide and if that breaks just as bad as a broken timing belt… So really I’m starting to feel like non-interference. Timing belt engines could be the better way to go.

Hoovie You paid a premium price for a low mileage shitty example of an e38. I have 262k on my 2001 740 sport short. There are people out there with 300k 400k and yes 500k cars with original guides. Next time buy a car with pedigree vs. A car that simply is clean with low miles.

    740d engine is less complicated.

Don’t listen to this guy one of the best reliable cars I’ve ever owned , like every great car it needs complete service history otherwise every car not looked after will be shit

Couldn't that plastic be replaced with Teflon maybe….?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Partstash says:

It’s not that bad doing timing chains. I’m in the middle of it myself. Just a lot of parts and a methodical process.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Former Marine says:

BMW made of cheap plastic, bad engineering principles like bad timing chain guide's! I have never seen so much plastic in an engine bay!

Nothing lasts forever, everything must be maintained. That being said, those timing chain guides need replacing every 15 years or so. Doesn't make the engine junk, in fact the engine itself is really good. Nice b8 m8

i hope the way he broke the tools unscrewing the pulley bolt was just for show. If this was not for show – he is one of the dumbest mechanics i have ever seen. U also supposed to hold the pulley and not the flywheel. Well…the dumbest automotive channel in youtube, what do i know..

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dilldow Schwagginz says:

Most BMW engines made in the last 15-20 years are junk. They make decent power and sound pretty good when running properly but it's not easy or cheap to keep them on the road.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Johansson says:

Thats why you dont get the m62 you get the m60b40

I would drop in an old Ford 302

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hangpilot 1 says:

Any yet, BMW failed to learn it's lesson and produced even more of the 4 cylinder N20 engines… that are failing due to timing chain guides. Come on BMW!

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seb F says:

Plastic chain guide ??? WTF BMW ???

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seb F says:

I am so amazed with mechanics ! Such a talent ! So many bolts and nuts .

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seb F says:

Are you sure this repair is only 5k US ? Seems to me that all this is a lot of man hours plus the parts are usually fairly expensive no ?
