The 30 year old Tire exploded put around the original unrestored car. Be smart to drive across the country because then you go look to spare. that is uh, original to 1968. Looks like it never been on the ground.

nowhere in it either, so I can't even limp it. Oh hello. All right, sorry I'm late. It's okay, they had an incident are we? Uh, we're about to build this better now.

Remember 's garage the dumbest envelope channel in all of YouTube and I feel like I found myself in a video game but not like Tron more like Grand Theft Auto Vice City because I'm in Miami and this is my latest purchase a 1968 Dodge Charger RT 440 and it was the cheapest one that I could find in the USA It's been sitting for many years, mostly original car other than one repaint and I'm going to attempt to drive it home cross country back to Kansas over a thousand miles I Can already tell this is going to be a tall order and I Gotta say in just the few minutes I've owned this thing. One quick drive up Ocean Avenue in Miami Beach and this thing gets a ton of attention and that's because it crosses over so many genres starting with of course bullets Steve McQueen this was the bad guy's car and one of the most famous Chase scenes of all time. And then you have the Dukes of Hazzard Of course the TV show with the General Lee, the now controversial Confederate flag on the roof and more recently The Fast and Furious franchise Dom's Charger in 1970 with a giant blower on top and he's driven several other iterations in the nine or ten movies. whatever it is now, so this car crosses Generations genres tastes and it is absolutely gorgeous.

These came out in 1968, this body styled the first year until 1970. before this it was sort of a weird style shared with a Plymouth Barracuda. It had the motors the 440, the 426 Hemi but it didn't have the looks until 1968.. Now this bad boy was certainly on my radar.

since selling my Hemi Superbird basically the same car with a giant Wing in 1969, the Charger Daytona was the NASCAR to have 1970, the Plymouth Superbird and they did that by taking a charger like this, putting a nose cone on it and a giant Wing but basically the same vehicle and they're worth a fraction of the price. Still pretty expensive, but this one being original other than one repaint and being around the holidays in sort of a funky Vibe with the economy I feel like I got a really good deal way less than half of what I sold my Hemi Superbird for and now I have well, basic the same thing. A lot of similarities but I love how original and mostly unmolested this thing is. and with that, let's start the tour and then we're going to try and drive it home, which is a very long way.

I don't think it's going to do it all right. Let's walk around this gorgeous thing. Starting with the back you see the beautiful tail lights. the Charger RT badging which this is what this car started life has this color combo, this trim and drive train.

It was born a 440 Charger RT and it still is numbers matching engine inside. it has had one repaint. you can see the stripes on the back but otherwise very very original. I Believe this is the original vinyl top on this thing.
What looks really cool in my opinion and why the Superbirds and most others are blacks which really kind of complements the green on this car which is it's a lot of green green everywhere you have the 500 wheels on it, you go to the front and you have these pop-up headlights. Beautiful one-piece Grille which is the same Grille that would have been in the bullet car from 1968. Each year the nose got a little bit different. I Do believe I'm missing a trim tag up here, but that's easy to fix.

but otherwise this is a totally iconic, amazing machine being interrupted right now by a duck tour. Are they going to go in the water? Yep They're going in? well clearly I'm not in Kansas anymore. but uh, you go into the inside and it's a lot more green in here. This is all original.

You have the vinyl seats with these really weird sort of mouths I guess expansion points for the seat like Kermit the frog's butt crack or something. and then the center console you can see has a really cool age and patina on it with some pitting. Automatic transmission: This is not a six-pack car with the extra carburation. this is just a 440.

Magnum I Don't believe the six-pack was available in 1968 but it has the exact same gauge set as my Super Bird but very weathered. Kind of a cool patina on it as well. You have the tick tock tack, there's the tachometer with the clock in there, the original radio, and Factory air conditioning. The green continues in the headliner and in the back it is so much green on green on green action.

it's just absolutely ridiculous. Even the padded Dash is 100 green. This is as close as you get to airbags is is cushioning the blow. The fuel cap here is so cool it just pops up sort of like a race car to power that 440 which is very very thirsty.

One thing to point out before we go under the hood though, this one hasn't had the brakes upgraded. This is four wheel drum brakes in 1968 and they are, well, a little bit terrifying. Definitely a one Mississippi before much of anything happens with these. So in modern traffic with people driving like idiots, you have to be careful in this car.

And then we pop the hood and you see this marvelous 440 which does have some aftermarket bits on it. You can see the valve covers, the intake are different, but then you look at the Block it's the correct original color. the header is obviously different. this car does sound mean and wonderful, but then you look around.

A lot of originalists going on including this giant compressor for the air conditioning. Just a big old thing and I'm not seeing any huge obvious leaks but the belts look old. This car has been sitting for some years and the tires are pretty flat spotted. Hopefully it comes out of that.
you can see the wiring, everything. the wiper motor there a very original. This car has not been restored but it has been lovingly preserved and I just absolutely love the noise on this thing. Foreign.

that's America right there. Oh a few chest hairs just popped out. but they may go back in because I did say I was going to try and drive this thing cross country. Uh, which on a car that's been sitting for years? that's uh, almost 60 years old and the tires I believe they are over 10 years old and flat spotted.

I Don't know about this, but we do have a goal for today is just to make it up to Tavares Florida to see. well Tavares She lives in a very appropriate place that's about three or four hours depending on traffic and hopefully this thing can do it. Listen to that All right. Pulling out in the charger and right into Miami traffic unfortunately which If This Were the Superbird I would be terrified right now because they have a tendency to overheat because of the nose cone.

but with this car it's got a nice big giant Grill and so far it isn't even trying to get hot. knock on knock on wood which actually this is this is Fake Plastic wood. but anyway, you can already tell it has a softer, more comfortable ride, a back seat for the kids. The seats do have a lot of cushion but not a lot of support.

so uh yeah, Lumbar pretty much non-existent here. Let's get a little bit out of town and see what this thing can do. Hopefully the tires smoothed out, but there is one stop I Wanted to make though here in Miami before going to Freddy land and it has to do with cars but nothing to do with this foreign. well.

I've owned this car for about three hours and it has been non-stop traffic the entire time I've owned it. But one thing I've discovered: I hit the headlight switch down here and uh, it doesn't appear my headlights are popping up so if I can't get that to work then we're in trouble. We're gonna have to stop somewhere for the night and then drive at dawn, but maybe they just need a little finagling. Why do people choose to live like this in this traffic every day? Well, the lights are on.

knock knock all right? Well I Guess they're manually operated so we're still mobile. What? Well yeah, we did finally get some speed. A few hours of that and it's the 30 year old Tire Exploded. go figure.

the rim. Buying it mostly original, unrestored car. Very smart to drive across country. It looks like it never built nowhere in it either.

so I can't even limp. It's in there to the nearest exit and there's how the evening ends. To get the Freddies it's 150 miles away. all the tire centers are closed.

It's gonna be about a thousand dollar tow because AAA can't find anybody. that's life. I'm gonna do this. Sorry I'm late.

It's okay. I had an incident. are we? Uh, we're about to build this better. That's uh.
it looks like the Close Encounter spaceship right now. Well we just decided to call it a night and get back to the car in the morning. I'm in Freddy's Guest House of this Mansion I was just in there taking a golden shower. It's a it's a golden shower and Freddie's out here tending to his Resort Holy crap.

Oh yeah, it's a way to get all the diseases, huh? Yep, a quick slide through. Uh big red streak coming down. Oh poor baby. Am I doing that right? Yeah yeah, there's a charger that has all four tires on it I can get mine some tires you have pillars Freddy I do cold tires.

a little bit cold and there's your leg. So this charger started Life as a V6 bank repo. wrecked once or twice, right? Yeah. and then you got a press car or a development car.

Yeah, yeah. so Dodge got a pre-production Uh 2021 Hellcat Charger red eye and they gave it to us and modified for roadkill nights. and then they said that we could keep everything except for the chassis. So I kept everything except for the chassis and then I put it into another car and I painted it and now this is, uh, technically a 2017 Dodge Charger SE V6 with every single Nut and Bolt from a 2021 charger.

So if you took it to CarMax they'd give you like 10 grand, probably six. Well, that is a thing of beauty and I wonder if these wheels would fit my charger I like the 500 Wheels though I think we found the problem, huh? Yeah, your Tire's a little flat tough old Rim though I went a little ways driving on it and it doesn't look too beat up at all. It's going to be fun trying to balance that you can do it. Oh uh.

okay. so the other thing we realized when we were unloading, this is the other tires. I Don't think the cords are connected anymore. They've completely milked out and the tires have become pull-on balloons.

They are rounded Boeing Drivers They looked fine when I left. Uh-huh I swear I mean it's about to rub on the fender. it's popped out so much. Tyler Did the previous owner say anything about these tires? He said that they were very old, that he's had it for 10 years and they should not drive.

Uh, four hours? Yeah, okay. they don't even have date codes on them, so they're probably 30 years old. That's good. Yeah, and they're tiger Paws, which are which are the best kind of tires motor wise though.

Hey, she's sound as a pound. That's cool. There's a there's a lot of space here that's like you could. Yes, you could have a party over here you can entertain.

You know it's an open concept I Guess so. So even when we do go get tires I'm not gonna drive this thing home cross country because going 65 it's revved like 4 000 RPM Four thousand Yeah. I Don't know what rear end it has in it because it's very Snappy off the line. but uh, the three speed and the rear end this motor doing a thousand miles.
does it have all its gears? I think so. Yeah, 65 miles an hour shouldn't be fourth out. That's like the damn near. Red Line it's it's pretty bad.

So I need to put some tires on it. Uh-huh you have a tire machine I Do I'll need to store it somewhere because I'll fly back. Okay, seems like you have plenty of room here. I You know when people, uh, have friends, um that, uh, use their facilities.

Usually they say please and thank you but when Tyler comes here, he's just like hey I brought you a car? I'm leaving please and thank you. Oh yeah, we're wrenching. Feel that male bonding going on here. You and wizard have something in common.

Cake? all right. Did I hurt it? Surprisingly no. it looks alright. Yeah the Chrome's not even busted tough.

This dog will hunt you got Drums yeah yeah oh boy in the front as well. Oh boy. oh yeah yeah. this is a that's a lot of car for that.

It's a little scary. look how not straight that one's rolling. Holy crap that one at least is still shaped like a tire. It's like blue blue side out.

Oh White's out for sure. Okay, thank you. why you got ears on Freddie it's gonna be loud. You should What? What's that for? This is uh is to seat the bead and I'm probably not going to do it right when I put this on the ground.

Okay, ready here we go. Still not on? it is? Nope, it will. It will. but it's now.

it's on the beat. It just needs to pop up so there's There's no wheel weights on this. Like there aren't any wheel weights at all. So not only were they, they're just perfectly balanced wheels and tires.

Yeah, that's we'll go with that. Yeah, it's rolling straight ish. Yes, backs are on this front one. It looks so wrong.

That is a it will stay up. Holy crap. It's like round out there. It's huge.

That's proper dangerous. Imminent death? Yeah, yeah good. I'm glad you got this fixed Tyler before your big trip. Well here's the other one and oh my God.

Wow. Uh. famous. YouTuber Dies on the highway.

A little extra security in those caps too. You don't want them getting stolen and 1968. Oh oh yeah. Jack went down quick I Guess I'll close its eyes.

Take it for a test drive now with round tires. I May have forgotten. one more step. Make sure the wheels don't fall off.

Oh you know it's been cranking for a while now. Look at the camera on it. It should start. Tyler You bought a really good car.

You got any starting fluid. If you do like a donut or something, this battery is going to cause a massive fire. Why? Because it's gonna. it's gonna fall to the side and the it's not bolted down.

No oh my. God Oh Cookie that's faster. That's what it needed. Yep, seller told me that the battery goes dead if you leave it connected.

So it did seem to be cranking a little bit slow as I fluttered it. Yeah, thank you. Thank you again for your help. No problem.
Oh a nice round tires. but now it's raining. So do we have wipers? We do. they work.

Then you stop. There we go. Oh it completely transforms the ride. But then, yeah, it's one of those drum brakes.

Holy bully. All right, let's hit it. Then we have the issue of the rear end gearing here. See: 55 miles an hour? we're at 4 000 RPM I Think the attack's a little bit off, but still, it's streaming because of the rear diff ratio which makes this thing very very fun.

From a stoplight, tires break loose, but uh, not good for interstate highway travel. What a great car. With a little bit of work, it can be an awesome car. I Am so happy with this thing.

Yeah, enough without saying goodbye. Why are you staring at me like that? Why is your face going all CGI okay I'm I'm out of here. foreign. What if the storm in? What if we lose again.

In '68 the battery was in the engine compartment not the trunk. Was there not a place for it in the engine bay?
