A hurts rain, racer, 1966, yellow gt350, a real one, it's real! Why would you buy an old rental car, welcome to movies garage, the dumbest automotive channel in all of youtube? And this is my latest purchase a 1966 shelby gt 350 hertz renter racer edition the real deal built by carroll shelby's team in their hangar in california, in 1966, sold to hertz from their car. A thousand of them were rent erasers, something you get for 17 a day and 17 cents a mile to drive this thing. Then it was sold for only 2 400 in 1968, and somebody made it a race car sat for a bunch of years after the motor blew on it and somebody bought it and made it into this. A group b, totally legal race car, a very rare opportunity to own a car that can go in any vintage race all over the country and well, i'm just not very qualified to drive it.
That's really the only issue. Otherwise, this car is a total dream. Come true, but it is a very hardcore race, car and well. I didn't realize how hardcore it is and how much you're giving up to well own one of these and drive it on the streets and really i haven't driven it at all on the streets.
I've taken it around the block a few times in the seller's neighborhood and my neighborhood never have really gotten on this thing and certainly have never driven it in any kind of distance. I don't think the previous owner has, after he recommissioned it, and it's been sitting for over 10 years before that. So today we're going to put it to the test and i'm going to drive it to nearly 40 miles up to the car wizards lair in newton kansas, and i'm going to see how far back i want to bring this car back to a driving car that You could take on the streets and less of a crazy full-out race car. Now i don't want to do anything to take away from this car being group b, legal uh, but really this thing was built just for one purpose and that's to go racing really really fast and you could add some things to make it a little more comfortable And livable and today i'm going to show you that before we hit the road, so the previous owner did do one thing to make this car a little more streetable and that's add street tires to it.
It had been sitting for 10 years and it was an old race car, so it was riding on something like this: these old goodyear slicks that look totally awesome but on the street uh a little dangerous, especially if it rains there's a few other bonuses in here. This car actually had a model made after it. You can see it's the same numbers this same everything there's a couple of these that he included with the sail, which is just so so cool and in this box here is an actual reproduction shelby r speedometer, because this car has a surprising lack of gauges. What it does have is really only for racing.
You have a big rule bar to step over every time which has to stay, but you have the rpm gauge up here. You have oil pressure, water temperature amps for the alternator, and then you have oil temperature and fuel pressure, not fuel level, not speed which in a car like this, you probably want to know how fast you're going. Thankfully, there's an app for that for me to get around for now, but how do i add a speedometer to this thing, especially that really cool carol shelby speedometer? I don't know i'm going to ask the wizard about it, but inside you can see. No carpets, no sound insulation whatsoever, no key to secure this car at all, just turn this switch and then all these on and that's how you start the car. So anybody could steal this thing. There's no security whatsoever and there's no way to secure the car at all, because there's no windows, there's no window down here, which you can have windows in a group b, race, car uh. They have to be the lexan plastic like the front and rear glass. So i can add windows i can add a key.
I can add a speedometer and still be group b legal along with adding windows, but i'm not sure if i really want to. I do think i want to add a fuel gauge, though i can swap out this fuel pressure gauge for a fuel level gauge, and it looks like this would be fairly easy to do, because, on this fuel cell racing fuel cell, that looks like there's a hole For a sender, but right now all you can really do is take this off and look inside which, as you can see, this little flap here is splashing the gasoline. So we do have some gasoline, but that is another obstacle here, because when i got this car i didn't know how much gas was in it and it takes 110 racing fuel, so an octane. They don't sell at gasoline stations anywhere unless you're going to a race car shop, so i had to go to a specific place to buy racing fuel buy a special can for it to put it in, and i put in five gallons to wear.
Hopefully, that's enough to make it to the car wizards yeah, but, like i said it's never been driven any kind of distance uh in a very very long time it does have working lights. Well, sort of the lights were flickering on the front. Uh no turn signals. So it is legal, i'm going to try and go get it inspected today at the highway patrol, hopefully they're able to issue me an inspection to where i can tag it, but we'll find out that's on the way the car wizard.
So let's go in a car. That's never really gone anywhere in over a decade, quite a process like launching a nuclear bomb here, all right ignition and it just fires right up with that 110 octane gas. Just it's incredible all right! Let me get strapped in and let's roll another thing that i can do all right, i'm gon na, let it warm up a little bit, but another thing that i can do that. I'm not sure if i want to do is this racing clutch which, if you can see down here, i mean hit it.
There is such a little point between engaged and disengaged. It is a full-out racing clutch that is very, very stiff great on the track. Obviously, for someone who knows what they're doing, but i don't know what i'm doing and on the street? Well, it's just just awful the one thing i wouldn't change is that exhaust note, even though it is very very loud, i should probably be wearing ear protection. It's just so good and now we've reached the point where there's no turn signals so old drivers at. I think uh right and left well that first ball went pretty good, but it is not getting up to operating temperature, probably because it doesn't have a thermostat in it race. Car i mean you, don't really need one, you just warm it up and then and then go but uh, so no hard driving yet, but we're getting up on the highway here see how it does i'm getting used to the clutch too. All right turn signal. You know it actually cruises down the highway, just fine.
I have no idea how fast i'm going, but it's about 2500 rpm to go. I don't know 60s, not bad lex. It now get to the inspection station and see how it goes all right. Hopefully, hopefully we get a yes back on the inspection.
There was a bad moment when there was no speedometer to tell how many miles this thing has. He asked me if it was going to be a non-highway title, i'm like no full title and he's like all right so we'll see and the only event on the car is well the original shelbyvin right there and underneath those rivets would be the ford factory, stamping Right there so uh, that's all this car has, which i think is enough, we'll see hopefully success. We have a good inspection, so i can. I can tag this thing and drive it on the road, even though that's uh, pretty scary right now, oh just got ta make it to the wizards, we're only well, not even halfway there all right.
Now, it's warmed up a little bit. Can you see what it's got for the first time? No traction on the three tires that noise um? Where did you get this? What where did you get this uh? Here's your little uh yeah? I got it in texas. Yes, yes, a 1966 shelby, gt350 hertz red eraser. It is beautiful.
What is this to hold the windshield yeah, because it's plastic here, let me let me get out here. Sorry take takes a minute to get out yeah. Okay, are you gon na? Do the whole? Why would you buy old rental car or something yeah, all right, nope, okay, i'm i'm kind of stuck! Please pull! Ah yeah yep. Okay, i'm out! Yes, a hurts rain.
Racer 1966 young gt350, a real one, it's real! Why would you buy an old rental car it? It's it's a real shelby. I know you don't like fords, but i don't know the whole race. Car thing is just i'm not a race car guy. I don't know you can't take that to go shopping.
Making me sad, wizard, shirley, okay, there you go surely you're! Joking, surely: okay, okay, thank goodness all right, uh yeah, because how could you not uh yeah, it's crazy! It is full out race, car and i do want to dial it back a little bit. There are a few issues that i want you to look at my ears. Stop ringing, but uh, it's beautiful! It is beautiful. I'll give you that all right, but i think they've ruined a perfectly good mustang. That's his opinion. Opinions are like uh anyway, yes, wizard, so civilizing. It is one thing i want to do, but there's also a few issues. Is there noise like something banging on the bottom of the car or vibrating uh, the accusump, which i i don't really know how that works? But before we do that uh the diablo is in a good spot.
It looks like it is so this car has been waiting four months. It loves to wait for months for things uh once it was a steering rack and now it's strut so attempt number three on rebuilding these leaky lift struts, which, as you can see it's lifted the car up, that's what it does to help it go over bumps And curbs and things that was leaking uh. They couldn't fix it three times rebuilt, but finally good. Finally, on the third time they went to a different material.
O-Ring magic mic actually got them installed. Today we lifted it several times, no leaks great, so everything's working except for the rear you, the fronts are fixed, but now you have some stiffness issues in the rear. What do you mean by stiffness issues in the rear right by the shifter? There's the oh that magic button there to uh up and down arrows, yes to increase the stiffness or decrease it. Yes, yeah.
If, once you start it, it has a little error. A little error like flashes and we pulled the codes. Actually, magic might pull the code on it. The rear right struts are bad.
It's throwing a stiffness error. Yes, i hate it when that happens, especially stiffness in the rear. I i don't know about that. But yes, stiffness issues are always bad.
The car seems to ride fine, though yeah, and then there's also that resonance issue there's that noise, that it makes when it accelerates, and you notice that it was a cracked exhaust, manifold or slightly cracked. But then that's not it quite. Does it no, it's not causing the noise? We just actually were checked it out today, while it was it's in fourth gear, 2500, rpms right where that resonance starts to happen. It just goes: that's the noise.
It is it's actually just like that. So it's like it. Like it doesn't have a stiffness error, it makes that noise, but it does, and then this moaning happens right. So i use my stethoscope to listen to transmission differential all over the driveline.
That's quiet and smooth there's no noises going on. Even the engine is quiet as far as noises through a stethoscope. So what is it? It's just resonance. We got the driveline rotating the tires rotating everything going on along with the engine hitting just at the right frequency and it it all just makes a weird noise.
So what would fix it? A free stove, an exhaust system? Yes very expensive, on these cars, but i do i need a header which they're all the old original headers freestyle exhaust. This thing is very quiet. Okay, it's a it's. A two for one special it'll fix the sound yes and it'll, get it'll, make an even better sound out the back. Okay, all right! Well, i guess i can at least take it home as is and start hunting down an exhaust for the diablo and see. If i want to live with this stiffness error for a while or not, it seemed to ride just fine, okay, uh, but uh. There's some ferrari action here, too ford versus ferrari i see magic mike, is bent over on your 308. How are things going here? Yeah? It's got.
You got an interesting uh thing going on on the freeway. You got to see it, i'm trying to get figure out what's going on with these headlights and if you want to take a look all right, uh, oh they got the floppy, the floppy, a winky wink like the countach when it gets confused, sometimes yeah. So i got ta figure out. What's going on with those it's not a stiffness error, though it's not a stiffness there, that's good, that's good! They come up nice and stiff wizard and it's not in the rear.
It's it's not in the rear. No, no! That's great! Uh, but also my ferrari, the 456 is here yes, uh. Let's go take a look at that thanks mike, so i finally used the ferrari for its intended purpose. I took it on a road trip uh to uh a porsche show porsche palooza i'll.
Do a video on that tier soon purchase came along with that on my trip to the porsche palooza in a ferrari, but uh had the kid in the back, the wife comfortable great time. Only issue was a hard start. It just took forever to crank, which was something that uh happened during card trek, but now it's gotten worse and it wasn't the fuel check valve. So it's something something else.
Yes, we actually found it and it is the fuel pressure regulators, those little guys when you first brought it up here. I could pull both of these vacuum lines off and it would just pour fuel out of here. There should be no fuel on the this side of the diaphragm. Only vacuum - oh, but it's just when it sets fuel pressure, is lost actually through here into the vacuum line.
Okay, both of them are bad. They both when i pulled the vacuum line off. They would just sit there and just drip gas out of it. Well, these little guys i mean on normal cars, they're cheap things.
So, hopefully, are you able to match it up to something? Are they affordable, they're, not cheap? So i got in contact with amh exotics. My guide, he has connections with actual ferrari, north america, those are discontinued. There are none. Of course, he does have on different models, ones that would match there's 1600 each each each not for the but any other card.
Like 50 bucks. I know these little bitty, those yeah 1600, each thirty, two hundred dollars for the pair okay, surely uh you have a like the kia, rondo fuel pumps. In this thing, rather than like the three thousand dollar ferrari fuel pumps, you got some something for me right. I do okay, okay, thank you. I was able to locate some that mount directly they're identical to these bosch ones, but they're just adjustable for racing. I see i can adjust them to match the factory specs and it'll work, just fine and they're about 300. Each. That's still expensive, but that's way better, it's very much better, but it will solve the final issue with this car.
Okay. Well, are you ready for a ride in a race car? I don't know i don't know if i need to get some extra underwear or we'll be fine: okay, yeah, it's just a normal seat! Wizard you have to step over the roll bar, but i'm gon na rack myself, careful graceful. Yes, all right issue number one wizard that no key thing um. We have a hole for a key yeah uh, but this that's it this anybody can hop in this thing and just drive off.
You push the button very easy to steal, yeah and no windows. We could add the plastic windows and still be illegal. A key would obviously make it legal. Obviously, if i want to drive on the street i kind of need those things watches the clutches yeah yeah it's stiff, but i'm starting to get the hang of it.
I think i'm gon na leave that alone, but also gauges. I have no idea how fast i'm going. We need to look into that when we can actually hear ourselves talk, but no speedometer, no fuel gauge. So uh, that's that's kind of an issue but wow there.
It it doesn't do it is on the acceleration. Sometimes i'm just going down the highway and it hits it just right now. Yes, and it runs really good when it's warmed up, but there's still a little bit of missing he's been sitting for 10 years. So, 10 years the thing um so wizard as we were talking about in the noise of the car uh gauges, i feel like we could add a speedometer to this thing, just to make it a little more civilized and a fuel gauge.
But how would we do that? Could you make a new panel, maybe machine it like your old machinist days or uh? I could, or i could just reuse that panel and we have a plasma cutter here. I can cut in a larger hole to fit a speedometer, and then we could replace one of the gauges with a fuel gauge. Well, we'd still lose one so yeah, which one do you want. I mean i guess i don't need to see the fuel pressure.
All the time i mean - that's probably the least important gauge, so maybe we lose that one drill, a hole for the speedometer and then like an external fuel gauge somewhere else in the car. I don't know some like where i can see, because i don't want to run out of gas. Obviously yeah. We could do that and then the other issue is back here.
It has an accusump system which i have no idea of. Like i barely know what it is, i know that it helps the engine. Uh get all lubricated when it's cold, so cold starts. Aren't that bad, but i feel, like the system is back here.
Yeah you see that gauge yeah, i see it. It should be pressurizing and from what i see just briefly online, it should have more than like just above zero uh when it's closed off, so i don't think it's really doing what it's supposed to be doing, which is preventing uh damage during cold, starts. As far as uh, you know getting the oil circulated before you start, so you know anything about it. I mean it's full race, car stuff. I don't do a whole lot of race car stuff, but i definitely can research it and find the answers. Okay, all right! Well, windows: i need to find my own windows, but that's pretty straightforward: they have to be plastic. Uh clutch. I think i'm gon na live with yeah.
Well, let's see what that noise is huh. It was like i feel, like it's around it's like around in here old race, car wizard. Let's see check out this rental car here. Yes, i see, i see some texas tea, huh yeah something's leaking from up above.
This is dripping onto the oil pan. Here it looks like the oil pan itself, all around the oil pan, we'll leave them back here. Look. This is yeah, i see well, this is all wet too.
The oil pan just needs to come off and be resealed okay. So that's all that dripping going on. No biggie brakes are nice and thick burpee yeah. Well, this duct tape is not uh too pretty.
I don't know that looks kind of like a rental car to me, so i get well, it's brake cooling, it probably so it goes in that hole there and then all the way to the brakes yeah. I just noticed a new hose and it's rerouted and done a little better. We can do that. Okay, brakes, look good.
There, suspension looks really nice. Look at the coilovers up there, yeah yeah, oh yeah, pretty they did a good job. It's just, i think, like you said, it's been sitting for 10 years. It just needs to be gone through, looks like the side plate on the transmission is leaking all this oil down here.
Okay, so that's all the wetness here, it's like steel, brake hoses, which is good, so those won't collapse with age or anything like that. Right right. I don't like that. The steering could potentially touch, i guess it isn't touching, but yeah.
I think we can run that a little better, okay. Well, this body is just incredible. It is painted with, like a rust proof, coating right, but it's a lifelong arizona car. So it's never had rust ever, which is very nice, very lightweight shaft.
It is huh yeah. So it has a little something of an exhaust. I don't know just basically glass packs right, let's see if we can find your noise uh. Well that's kind of loose well yeah! It's got an oh that bolts yeah.
That needs to be. It needs to be addressed, tightened up huh, but that's not that's not rattling. So this side, this one doesn't even move well looks like somebody did something strange there. Oh oh there.
It is that you you found it. I did with the vibration of the engine running at a very higher frequency. Yeah. That's that's it right. There sweet, okay, not a big deal. This is a forward. Nine inch rear end, it is leaking and it's leaking nine inch goo everywhere. Nothing is that the goo! That's continuing back on the fuel cell yep, it's just spraying with the wind all the way with the fuel cell and so the fuel cell.
It doesn't have a gauge on it, a sender right, but we could add that easily enough, i suppose right yeah. I think there should be a port on there that, where a cinder can go big, beefy drum brakes, yeah the brakes feel great. I would have them bled. Of course i mean you're already gon na have to do the rear end.
The transmission pan, the oil pan yeah well the transfer the side plate on the well, not this, the transmission pan, that's the side plate. It's still servicing the fluids. It's going through a car, that's been sitting for a while plugs wires. Carb clean, you know, yep, just a normal recommissioning.
I suppose huh yeah see what's going on there. Oh bunch of extra those are those aren't hooked up right. I would like turn signals that would be nice. Those are like: reverse lights, reverse lights, yes, lighting working would be wonderful, and maybe we rig a toggle switch just for the turn signals rather than since it doesn't have a stock on the column yeah.
We could do that and uh reverse lights. That may just never happen, i don't think the transmission has it, but it does probably have a spot for a speed sensor somewhere. Hopefully right here, oh good, just like a little plug there. Okay, i think it would be right in there, so i can have a speedo.
Yes, i don't understand the paper, the paper bag. It's got cocaine in it. No i'm just kidding oh lunch. They were trying to cook lunch, maybe and forgot about it.
Maybe someone made them a ham sandwich and put the paper up yeah. Well, all right! I guess we can put it down and i'll show you under the hood. It's it's! It's really something! Okay, it is pretty. Oh, my yeah that doesn't look like a showroom mustang from the 60s.
That's definitely a race engine yeah high compression 289 375 at the wheels. I have the dyno specs here in this book, which here let me show you that, but i don't think there's any issues up top side, okay other than you know, just a normal tune-up maintenance. I suppose yeah, but what's fun, though, is the pedigree? With this thing, wizard - and this is so much one of the best parts - the original sales invoice uh 2400 back in 1968 after it was a hertz, run - eraser 2400. Yes, yes, and then uh you have the photos of when it was bought after it was raced.
As a hill climb, car and a dragster motor blew and it sat for decades in the garage, wow and then recommissioned, but then there's also service records and everything else you get to add to this pedigree wizard i do. You will forever be in this horse's mouth. I i don't know, yes, it's a house whatever it is. Yes, you will be part of this car story and me - and you know, having a car like this: is you don't own it you're kind of the curator of a piece of history, a piece of art and that's something? That's just just really cool, at least to me. I don't know, but uh also being able to track this thing someday. Do that i'm so excited it is it's exciting. It's a cool car. It really is, and hopefully i don't blow up the motor.
So, thank you all so much for watching. If you're new to the channel uh, please hit that subscribe button and we have a limited run of new shirts wizard new shirt. I partnered with a new group and we have a shelby gt350 movies garage shirt. That's being pre-sold right now, uh limited quantity so be sure to buy it before we quit the pre-sale ships out sometime in december.
Thank you so much for watching. Oh you got ta like it come on. I do i like it. You.
ABSOLUTELY,, one of THE MOST AWESOME CARS EVER BUILT. If ever I win a Lottery first buy my wife a new refrigerator and then go shopping for real, authentic, GT-350. I love 289's.
Or you can buy a Mustang parts car and convert it back to stock. That’ll solve all your niggles with it.
So let me get this straight, you sold a perfectly streetable mustang, to buy a race car to convert to a a streetable mustang???? There’s only one thing race cars are good for and that’s racing.
Note the car's Pedigree then immediately proceed to toss a binder on the hood. That's Hoovie.
Wizard's schoolgirl scream and then the Three Stooges face move had me rolling on the floor. Thanks for the great laugh today..
That resonance noise issue could be the rear wheel bearings – i had that issue w/my 350z. Maybe checks those out. Defective wheel bearings do make a weird resonance noise that sounds very much like it's coming from the exhaust.
i own an old muscle car. it is a street legal race car. blinkers with street slicks. it is not a car the casual enthusiast would want. it seems really cool to most folks. but manual brakes, manual steering, no speedometer, etc, etc, … will wear thin pretty fast for most. proper fuel has to be planned. dry weather guaranteed, loud.
a high level of maintenance (valve lash, low mileage oil drains, valve spring replacement, lifter replacement, and more). you have to really want to drive a car so ill equipped for the street, on the street.
and i love Hoovies channel, but i dont think his casual understanding of cars will keep him from damaging the engine.
wizard should pull the distributor, spin the engine a few times, hand Hoovie the distributor and say if you can put it back in and get it to run then you may have the knowledge to operate this car. not a hard task, only a half in wrench required. but you have to understand a little to get to that point. without some decent knowledge level he is likely to hurt the lower end, and possible drop a valve if lash opens up.
but i will say, his car, his money, it is his to do as he pleases. in reality, compared to fixing lambos, a 289 rebuild is pennies.
I do like the wizard filling in the YT role as the arm candy reacting to the power to get clicks. The beard takes it to another level. Great toy find Hoovie!
If you "upgraded" (or downgraded) to a Mustang II (also known as Pinto) style Front Knuckles/Suspension, the Calipers are at the rear of the Rotor and would allow the Front Brake Ducting to be more Efficient…
I am 76 yrs. old and 6'9" Tall — but I LOVE IT !!!!! Good Luck with it & Don't hurt yourself !
Anybody could steal it…….now that you showed them how to start it……most thieves would be to stupid to figure it out.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27)
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. (Isaiah 66:4)
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5)
Awesome video and totally awesome car! No shout out to Car Wizards channel? Or maybe I missed it. That guys the man!
