Welcome to Ruby's Garage! The dumbest Automotive channel in all of YouTube and I'm in Monterey California for Monterey Carl week and I'm also celebrating a few months early the one year anniversary of ownership with my 2008 Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster This amazing car that's been on fire once, but it's actually been a totally Flawless amazing year of ownership and here in Monterey I have fallen in love with this car all over again and that's what this video is going to be about. Today six years ago my first Car Week video for you guys I bought a 95 C36 AMG in San Francisco drove it down here and stayed in a garden shed for I think 50 or 60 dollars a night. the cheapest way to do Monterey Car week and now. well I've upgraded quite a bit.
a lot of it because you all watched that video and so many others and made this purchase and so many others possible. I am so eternally grateful for you all for watching these videos and making it possible. and today I'm going to take you along for the ride for all the amazing stuff you can do at Monterey Car Week! I'm also going to give a one-year ownership recap with my SLR McLaren go over some of the things I like, well, pretty much everything I like and a few things that I don't like about this car and then we're going to go visit a very, very amazing icon that's also a little unappreciated, a little misunderstood like the SLR but worth a lot more than the SLR some people used to say. this is a lesser Ferrari or not a Ferrari at all, but now it's worth every bit of half a million dollars.
so that'll be amazing to drive. So my week actually started by shipping this SLR McLaren out to San Jose California I know I didn't drive across country but the car only has 4 000 original miles on it so I don't want to load it up doing a cross-country Drive Well for no reason. it's a long way from Kansas but it's funny Shaughnessy Transport They always take care of me. always shipping amazing cars.
They asked me to store a pretty special machine for them that was heading west or waiting to Head West and that was a brand new AMG GT but not just the GT. It is a black series and the P1 Edition. So it was built as an apology for Project One owners people who are waiting on their long delayed Center seat AMG Supercar and uh well, they offered a black series to them as sort of a pittance to weight. buy this and make a bunch of money on it while you're waiting for the AMG Project One.
and that's what was selling here in Monterey Car week at the RM auction. So I actually met up at San Jose at the 408 garage first where this car was shipped and well, the masters of Ceremonies at the 408 garage rally was Ed bullion and he had a very interesting car so let's take a look at that. Yeah, it certainly felt cool. My SLR until the Svj Roadster showed up, but uh oh, already having a police encounter but right behind me I'm sure you noticed the elephant in the room literally Ed bullions Cayenne Turbo and isn't that cute? about to take this on a crazy Journey up through the tip of Alaska and all the way down trying to set another speed record. So he is the officiator of this rally. Good timing. We didn't actually plan this for once. So where are we going with this? Uh, we are headed to Monterey by way of a restaurant in Santa Cruz and then and then off to Sway's headquarters in Montana for their Sway Day open house and then on to the Arctic Circle We're going to Prudo Bay Alaska and back to put this one to the test.
It's uh, hopefully even more capable than the car Trek six car. Oh yeah, that's a low bar obviously, but it's a Cayenne Turbo they look so funny with the small diameter Wheels it was. those are the the only 18s we could fit around the calipers, but they do clear uh, you got to be careful about where you put the wheel weights but prepared for anything. Couple extra stairs, a little more travel.
ready to run into some moose? Nice. Well, hopefully there's none on the trip to Monterey I Hope not. No. I don't think you'd do well with a moose at all.
No, no, No. So I Had a spectacular drive into Monterey and definitely the first stop had to be RM Auctions to see the AMG GTR Black Series cell. But also they had this amazing collection of junkyard. Ferraris Basically all these Ferraris were in a building that collapsed some amazing amazing machines and they sort of recreated the scene of it in a sort of junkyard style at the RM auction, which is about the fanciest auction here.
At Monterey Car Week, it was quite a sight to see. So obviously I've been to a lot of cool auctions, but uh, never something been more up my alley I think before than this derelict collection at RM All the cars are massive massive restoration projects with massive estimates. I'm kind of starting the back the least significant here with all these are sat for years like this one. Uh, 25 to 50 000 for the 400 automatic.
That's definitely the cheapest, but as we go down the road things get quite a bit more significant. and there's a V12 Boxer 512 I believe And yeah, I spent 100 to 200 000. Hasn't moved in a long time, but then there's this. They put a wood Beam on top of it because that's what happened to the car.
They didn't do this and break it themselves, they just sort of replicated the damage of what happened. So this car is selling at a fancy Hyatt auction here in Monterey and it looks like it belongs in the junkyard. The estimate: 125 to 200 000. Now that's that's one of the cheaper ones.
We'll keep going down here. I Mean there's there's a raccoon in here. What the heck says 67 Ferrari 330 1.5 million to 2 million dollars. and it's It's a mess.
It's a dirt. look at this. Ferrari it's a 308. Yeah.
GTB had the roof falling on it. Still think 125 to 200 000. This is just absolutely nuts. Now this is a heavy hitter over here once again. just nasty bird poop sitting forever. 64 Ferrari 250 for 600 to 1 million dollars. but that is not. uh, the most significant this rope.
It keeps getting better. This is a Ferrari 275 GTB It's so hard to believe that this one hasn't been restored yet. The King Daddy. Two million to two and a half million.
Look, the roofs caved Jim Absolutely nuts. and then this right here. old Ferrari race car. What's left of it? Estimate somewhere over a million dollars.
All these cars selling today here at RM the derelict collection and then over here is the AMG GT that I stored in Wichita for about a week. Very few in the United States Obviously because AMG project ones aren't being sold in the U.S So cool. There was also some amazing sales at the RM Auctions A lot of Records set, but also a lot of shows to go to including well, the Top Dog, The Quail now I haven't gone to the Pebble Beach Concourse in years. I Don't really feel the need to because the Quail well has elevated the game so much that really they are the place that everybody wants to go.
The tickets are very hard to get or very very very expensive. So for me to be able to get in just because of YouTube Cloud because of you all watching the videos I'm very grateful for that and there are so many cool things to see at the coil. take a look! So two years ago I was looking at the new countage getting unveiled here. Now it's an SUV that lands the door that I don't know a thing about but it looks very electric.
two-door four-seater but even neener over here our first look at one of these. Safari Huracan so goofy I Really need to finish the 911. Safari See this is why I've been the pebble in years and always want to come to Quail because the displays are just unreal. So now they have a gathering of nine, five nines.
Let a gaggle. What would you call these? Unbelievable to even see one in person? They have like 10 of them here. Just nuts. That's the thing about Monterey Car: We can see these cars and then they just start to feel it.
starts to feel normal to see these cars several times a day or every day. My SLR is like a Toyota Camry in comparison out here and super cars. and it's not just one. Pagani it's half a dozen or more.
and look at this Insanity here details. just unreal. And now we're at the evolution of the Supercar which of course one of the Genesis here. Mira SV but uh, so many other interesting things.
They even put a DeLorean in the evolution of a supercar. hey Tomaso Mangusta Holy Moses I don't even know what it is I'm sorry, no I'm just doing this for Doug Demuro car spotting all the Carrera GTS But then we get into something that feels like home. So it's a little humbling to see uh Ferrari 599 over here. And it's not a gated manual.
it's not a GTO it's just a regular old GTB a Gallardo Of course the crazy no roof one I Believe this is an 88 Countach from Curated working the way around Mercy and there's even enough for Roadster same color same year just at the red interior I Doubt this one's been on fire though. Oh that's cool. Look at the roof. has the woven in with the red there doing crazy things to the camera. These Slrs had a really interesting material with the roof, something they experimented with so you could go at speed with the top up. A lot of carbon fiber too. Wow! you can do a bit of yaunt shopping Villages yawns Oh the new Mack Daddy from singer here Whoever Thought an impact of over 911 could be this gorgeous and flared out like an old race car. You can see how they're using the rear windows for the intakes on the motor.
always artwork. Now the Remick this one isn't upside down off a cliff on fire like uh, what? Richard Hammond could do it better on camera. It looks a little conservative, but it actually looks really, really nice unlike me on camera. I look the same terrible either way or in person.
Neat display. Bugatti's over there Winter works. The quail is just an absolute overload and after that I just wanted to drive around taking all the scenery. 17 Mile Drive Ocean Avenue in Carmel where the street Parks amazing things like an Enzo or an F50 or McLaren F1 Just absolutely nuts and then the next day got up.
Went to Concord to Lemons last year. We had a little incident there had a car trek but thankfully I didn't get thrown out this year and then headed over to Laguna Seca to see the Vintage races. Now a big part of this video I Thought was going to see my old Mustang my 66 Shelby GT350 That was supposed to be racing there I sold it at Barrett-Jackson The person who bought it said he had entered it in it was accepted and ready to go. but I imagine it did what? uh, it always did to me which was broke so it wasn't there.
They were racing some other car but maybe someday I'll see that car on the track again. Was really looking forward to seeing that but didn't happen. So now we're going to head back over to 17 Mile Drive and see this amazing Ferrari Dino But first let me take you around, show you the SLR McLaren and go for a quick drive as we head over there. Now she has a little Grody and grimy from Monterey car week, but that's totally fine with me.
Still absolutely gorgeous. 2008 SLR Roadster About 2000 Slrs produced in their production run a little over two thousand. About 500 of them were roadsters and you can cut that in half As far as how many made their way into the United States So 200 and something probably in the U.S This one had a little fire in the trunk, some electrical short that ruined the wiring harness. Not a salvage title though.
No accident history, but that's why there's a little bit of a ding on this thing and why I Was sort of attracted to it when I bought it at the Barrett-Jackson Auction a year ago and there is no ill effects. It had everything repaired, the wiring harness, replaced everything fixed. So where this car has been like brand new I mean it only has 4 000 miles on it I Bought it with under 3 000 miles on it and it's just been absolutely. Flawless Now these cars of course an amazing cooperation between Mercedes and McLaren. This was built in McLaren's Idle F1 facility so they quit making the McLaren F1 Now like a 15 million dollar car, this was the next thing to be built in there. Completely engineered by McLaren Mercedes Just basically supplied the design and some of the running gear, the engine and such, but everything was engineered by McLaren Now the nice thing about this is the doors go up on the Roadster unlike the SLS even though it is a convertible thanks to those butterfly doors and then the engine is mounted way way in the back behind the front wheels and these gills is sort of attributed in 300. SLS they're actually functional because of those side pipes. kind of like the old race car slrs as well.
So everything here has a purpose. even the vents in the hood vent the exhaust in traffic. I could see the heat coming out from basically the headers, that being a little vent there. of course the shape of the nose is a little a little phallic, but it's sort of a tribute to the old race cars there and sort of a modern take.
And you know I Thought this car would be a little bit under the radar for Monterey car a week that people wouldn't appreciate it as much. but actually the thing got a lot of attention. A lot of appreciation and I was very surprised. Very pleasantly surprised that this car got almost as much love as say when I brought my Countach here two years ago.
so you look inside side and I Suppose one of the criticisms that have and most people do with the SLR is a lot of the cheapish Interior stuff that you'd see in a generic Mercedes even like a C-Class like the radio and some of the Plastics in here not a high quality Top Notch like you'd see with a Supercar and this car well it is a carbon fiber body. a very very expensive so for it to be cheapened a little bit with the Plastics in here does kind of take away from it a little bit, but not all that much. You see the McLaren logo in the instrument cluster. It is quite an experience to drive.
The door handles and the seat adjustment and windows are all down low on the floor, not on the door because of the butterfly situation and then key wise starting it up Top Gun Style which I'm wearing actually my Top Gun Watch Ed bowling gave this to me as a thank you for Car Trek, but uh yeah, very cool right now. Very very cool. Driving off in this thing and cruising in Monterey car week I mean it certainly has a presence. It doesn't feel like an SL it feels more special.
and when I talked to Ed Bolling about this car a few years ago when he bought the Paris Hilton one uh he talked about how the SLR felt more special and I just kind of thought the SLS was a way better car and well it is. but it definitely doesn't feel as special as an SLR McLaren Now another knock on these is the engine. the 5.4 liter V8 the AMG derived motor like it's not special or something but McLaren breathed on this tour it has 617 Horsepower Supercharged so it's oh really quick and compared to other cars of the era the Carrera GT the Enzo Ferrari which are now a million dollars or multi-million dollars, this car is in the same league of those back then for a fraction a small fraction of the price. So I feel so fortunate to own one of these and be able to experience it at Monterey Car Wake. Oh but now we're going to experience something else. Really excited for this. There it is man! So I got this opportunity if you were here Greg at Tiafo Garage who has a YouTube channel as well? Thank you so much! So you've had this thing for a few years now. What year is it? It is a 1972.
72 obviously the open top there so it's uh, like a GTS 46 GTS There was a long time where this was like not a Ferrari People thought this was a lesser redheaded stepchild like the Ferrari California of today where people think oh, the California is just terrible. it's not a Ferrari that's what the Dino was. But of course now uh, there was one at the derelict collection I think it sold for 300 000 that needed absolutely everything. So uh uh, this one being what it is a later car I think the DTs the open Thomas Before that, it's worth more than my countage.
It's a a blue chip collectible for sure. So yeah, they used to send them over to the Fiats and they're going. oh, you go over to the Fiesta. Ferraris So the once hated this isn't a Ferrari Take it, get it out of here is now something that's really appreciated.
and I'm man. I've never had an opportunity to drive one of these, so it's very exciting when you emailed me and said that I could there it is. Yep, so transverse V6 The belts and such are all over here in the alternator and all that. Um, and then it's a 65 degree versus 60.
almost every other V6 is 60. Enzo Wanted the long induction and to get it long and straight, it had to be a 65 degree. All right. There's probably a joke in there somewhere, but well, with the 308s, they're transverse mounted as well.
so obviously that theme continued later. But so B6 then that was the first V8 Mid Engine If that led to the Magnum right? I'm curious how it drives. You are absolutely welcome to find out. You're welcome to try it and find out You sure? I mean you see my YouTube channel? You see what I do? Yeah, um.
well. there was a Ferrari that just burned down on YouTube from some other stupid YouTube yeah, this one was peeing gas on Monday But yeah. okay, all right. Well, okay, you don't have to tell me twice.
I'm in starting. Okay, that sounds very throaty for a V6 All right, reverse it a little bit down. Yep, let's not hit a Honda Odyssey in the half million dollar Dino and we're off. Oh oh oh, it's all crunchy. Okay, he did mention the gearbox a little finicky I got it in the first that time. so let's be careful with the one two shifts, but otherwise, just enjoy it. Yeah, here goes nothing well in the history of unloved sports cars: the Dino, it makes no sense because I mean it is absolutely gorgeous in the first place. and then, uh, they do say these cars drive really well.
I'm on 17 Mile Drive I Can't go more than you know 30 40 miles an hour. but I Can already tell this does not feel like something that was designed in the 60s and built in the 70s. It's It's much tighter, it feels more like a Lotus Elise or something a decade or two newer, and it definitely doesn't have any creaks and rattles either. And this isn't like a concur restored car either.
it's It's 38 000 miles. pretty low for its year, but uh, I don't think it's been all taken apart and redone. All right, let's get back up in a second. I'm gonna give it a little bit of oomph here.
Wow, that is great, huh? Yeah, people that say it's a V6 and no, this is. uh, it feels quite a bit more special in the 308 and quite a bit more power too. I Can see that is definitely a racing bread engine. It is very rev happy in the car itself, just so well balanced.
Okay, I'm on board with this being half a million bucks. I really wasn't before I Get this beautiful striking is amazing, but yeah it is. It is really special feeling for sure. And not only that, but I'm driving one of the most amazing cars ever on 17 Mile Drive Looking out on that view.
holy moly and then just a Randomness like an Aventador is is a boring camera here. I Mean we really don't care because look, it's a Pagani sauce. this is just going down the road. oh and then pulling away.
uh what is that? a Senna and a Carrera GT just whatever just just hanging out. I mean that is Monterey car week In a nutshell, man, what a week! I Know this video is a bit all over the place but I thought it'd be fun to take you along for the ride with Monterey Car week and everything that I did because it's just so much fun. and if you have the opportunity to come out here, please come out and do it. I mean all the things that I did are pretty accessible to everyone with the exception of like the RM auction.
you have sort of to be a registered bidder, but everyone else there's plenty of their auctions you can go just for the general admission ticket. Maybe you can't drive a Dino either, but wow thank you so much for watching.
Didn't he give this one to Magic Mike?
Lmao when he said I don’t even know what that is
it’s so sad to see this car with you. The owner you got it from was forced to sell it for a divorce settlement and it was against his will. it was his dream car and it breaks my heart to see this woman rip that away from him. he’s now downgraded to an AMG GT black edition but it’ll never amount to this car.
Mercedes have never had a front end as gorgeous as this or since.
Rimac is pronounced as "Ree-Mats". 😉
Doesn’t trump have one of these?
I sold my SLR less than 2 years after purchase. Great car with a brutal ride. You had to get out every 275 miles and take a break. It was very easy to drive fast though, much more so than my Carrera GT.
If im correct the engine comes out to do spark plugs.
Car is dope Hoovie. IWC very nice…
Hoovie maintains the humble narrator persona, but it is hard to see it from the cliffs of Monterey.
Vintage cars always excite me, but the modern Supercars with low production numbers are boring. Who cares? None of those idiots race them or track them. What's the point? (and they are not beautiful, not dynamic art, as Jay Leno would say. They have more comment on human psych than engineering.) Last, Hoovie is mocking yacht sales booth. How is that different from the dingbats buying/looking at shitty supercars?
Got a close up of the SLR st the Mercedes Museum.
It was a bugati
As you hear, off in the distance, ever so faintly “THIS ! Is my Porsche GT & today I will show your it’s quirks and features”
I’m surprised you didn’t have to credit the song in the background.
Did the Cupid song hit you with a copyright?
I have a 2007 mercedes s600 v12 twin turbo for sale in phoenix that doesnt need anything brand new rims and tires the cars in really good condition
